A study Day being organised by Wallingford U3A “Historic Wallingford”

Historic Wallingford
Application Form

A Study Day on ‘Four Opera Masterpieces’ is being planned for November 2011. It will be held at Rewley House, Oxford on Tuesday 15 November 2011.

This Study Day will explore opera, its artistic rationale and background and development through the ages up to the present time looking at four key works – Gluck’s ‘Orfeo et Eurydice’, Mozart’s ‘Marriage of Figaro’, Verdi’s ‘ Othello’ and Puccini’s ‘La Boheme’.

If at all possible we would like to involve U3A members from throughout the Thames Valley Network in giving talks on the various operas, so that Speakers will be both professional opera speakers and U3A Music or Opera Group Leaders who have a interest in or even passion for opera and a particular composer. Please could you pass this preliminary flyer for the Study Day to any interested members, particularly Opera or Music Group Leaders who might be interested in giving a talk. Volunteers to talk should contact

Thames Valley -Riverside Project

Riverside Revealed

Wellington College, Crowthorne, Berkshire RG45 7PU

Wednesday, 26th -Friday, 28th October 2011

The Event: The culmination (at least for the moment) of the Riverside Project is to be held at

Wellington College over three days. This is a residential event, although those living locally may

choose to go home at night. This is a unique opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere of a public

school, which was built by a charitable trust for the benefit of the sons of army officers, named after

the great Duke and opened by Queen Victoria in 1859. Built in a style known as “Nineteenth

Century Baroque” it is a splendid building with excellent conference facilities. There is a full and

varied programme of lectures, activities and reports as well as an Exhibition, which promises to

show the results of all the activities and research, which U3A members have achieved over the past

two years.

Facilities: Lectures will be held in “Great School”, which is a well-equipped and comfortable

Seminar room. The Exhibition will be set up in “Old Hall”, which is a huge panelled room perfect

for the purpose. We also have exclusive use of a large Common Room next to the Dining Hall

where evening activities will take place. We suggest you bring an umbrella in case of inclement

weather as there is no covered way between the main building and either the car park or houses.

Meals: All meals will be in the main Dining Hall and will be self-service. The quality of the food is

excellent and there is always a good choice, including vegetarian options. There will be a Bar both

evenings from 6.30 – 10.00 in the Common Room -normal bar prices will apply.

Accommodation: Both single and twin rooms are available in one or more of the school boarding

houses, which will be for our sole use. Upstairs rooms are accessible by lift. Most rooms are not en

suite but there are plenty of showers and loos on each floor and most rooms have hand basins.

PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN TOWELS. There are limited kitchen facilities in the houses for making

hot drinks and also small communal seating areas. Car parking for residents is available at the

house.

The cost: £118 per person for the whole three-day programme. This includes two nights bed and

breakfast, a two course lunch and dinner each day plus tea or coffee on arrival and morning coffee

and afternoon tea each day. It also includes participation in the full Programme of events and

lectures. There are no hidden extras – except bar bills.

The day rate: £78 per person for the whole three-day programme. This includes all of the above

except bed and breakfast. (Dinner is included to allow attendance at the evening activities.)

The closing date for applications is Monday, 20th June 2011 (Later applications will be accepted if

space is available.) and full payment must be received by 1st September. Rooms will be

allocated on a first-come first-served basis, so if you have special requirements please apply

as soon as possible.

Please complete the Application Form and send it with a cheque for a minimum non-refundable

deposit of £30 per person to: Mrs Agnes Budagowska, 3 Draycott Close, Park North, Swindon,

SN3 2RN Cheques must be made payable to: U3A Thames Valley Network.
